Mysteries of the Macabre… Unmasked

Tears in Heaven; The Music of Grief

Symbols of death encoded in music (such as the Dies Irae motif), sonorous commemorations ("à la mémoire de...") and explicit evocations of the topic (Requiem, Funeral March) will feature in the masterclass ”Tears in Heaven: The Music of Grief” given by musicologist Wolfgang Marx from University College Dublin. An acknowledged specialist on this topic, he is the founder and editor of the book series “Dublin Death Studies”, among others. ”Make Room for the Grand Macabre!” is the title of one of Wolfgang Marx’s articles; the organisers of the Ligeti Festival 2020 took note of it, reserving a one-hour slot for him on Wednesday, October 28th, at 6 p.m. (GMT+2), at www.ligetifestival.ro.

”Make Room for the Grand Macabre!”

In Paradisum

This year's Ligeti Festival 2020 composer-in-residence, Alexandru Murariu, has been re-named the "Angel-in-residence" by Irinel Anghel – and with good reason! Not only does this title describe the young composer’s sweet and kind personality, the poster graphic for his concert, but also the work he wrote as a commission of the Festival: “In Paradisum, Chorus Angelorum”. Enjoy a short fragment of this piece, performed by the Ensemble Couleurs and the Jubilate Choir, which was recorded within the beautiful medieval ambiance of the Tailors’ Tower at Cluj Napoca.

Crossing the Styx; Whispers from the Underworld

The evocative words of the composer and performer Irinel Anghel are meant to lure the audience into the Underworld. Read carefully her whispered message about her ”Avant-Goth” Performance scheduled within the Festival ”A Tribute to György Ligeti in His Native Transylvania”:
„I buried musics in other musics. I concealed my secrets which will be revealed only if heard through headphones. I burnt old sonic memories and, for the first time I was confronted with the impossibility of completing a project, having the distinct feeling that I could polish it or even change it ad infinitum. Paradoxically, the topic of Death provided me with an opening instead of a closure.
Halloween night is the time to cross the Styx together, guided by ourselves, Irinel Anghel, Călin Torsan, and Alexandru Claudiu Maxim. See you safely on the other side, do not get lost on the way and, remember to wear headphones!”

Citiți cu atenție mesajul ei șoptit ce descrie evenimentul ”Avant-Goth” Performance programat în cadrul festivalului ”A Tribute to György Ligeti in His Native Transylvania”:

Mysteries of the Macabre… Unmasked

”Masked, or unmasked? That is the question!”, especially in the middle of the COVID19 pandemic. The ”Mysteries of the Macabre” from the Ligeti Festival 2020 will eventually be unmasked, not only in sounds, by the fantastic musicians of the Ad-HOC ”and friends” ensemble, on November 1st, but also verbally, by the wonderful Austrian conductor Gottfried Rabl, who says a few words about the concert to our audience:
